The "Mike" (Microtonal Theorist)

The Mike is an archetypal representation of a musician who dislikes 12-tone-equal temperament. Due to its widespread use in music, they detest the tuning and view it as inferior. However, instead of making music in alternative tunings, a Mike will spend nearly all their time "theorizing" about the field's mathematical aspects. Isolated in their own impractical analyses, they lose touch with music itself and begin building a web of needlessly complex language around themselves. In a Mike's mind, the understanding of their own convoluted terminology is proof of their intellectual superiority. However, when it comes to making compelling music, these theories fail to provide any practical insight.

If you engage with a Mike, be prepared for answers to questions you never asked, excessive analysis of arguments you never made, and similar to the Jazz musician, an astounding amount of pride - not only in the complexity of their music, but in the incoherence of their character. A Mike is also a type of Clud.
