Jonathan Berroa
Jonathan (Jonny) Berroa (born January 31, 2006) is an American composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with artists like Genevieve Artadi, Louis Cole, phonon, Anatole Muster, and Israel Strom. He is a keyboardist for KNOWER and joined them for their November 2025 U.S. tour and all their 2026 shows. His content on social media has collected over 5 million views and grabbed the attention of world-class musicians.
Berroa is a leading trailblazer in the Fizz movement, known for his technical, improvisational, and compositional abilities. His contributions to the movement include Fizz songs and remixes, educational videos like “Fizz Shredding 101”, reels featuring his shredding over tracks from Fizz Vol. 1, and FizzWiki articles.
Early Life and Education
Berroa was born on January 31, 2006 in New York City. He attended Special Music School from K-12, studying classical piano under Natela Mchedlishvili, as well as composition and jazz piano. He has worked with various prominent jazz musicians, such as Aaron Diehl and Adam Birnbaum. His private instructors and teachers noticed and commented on his technical ability and natural feel for jazz, encouraging him to pursue the genre on a professional level. Through the Kaufman Music Center organization, he was the recipient of the 2023-24 Peter Michael Gray Award for outstanding musicianship.
In 2024, he received a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where he is expected to graduate in 2028.
Influence
Berroa's musical influences growing up came mostly from various video games like Minecraft, Geometry Dash, and Mario Kart - which led to his discovery of artists like Jacob Collier, Dirty Loops, and Virtual Riot. He commented that the Mario Kart Wii OST was "the greatest soundtrack of all time". Movie soundtracks, additionally, were huge inspirations for him (notable ones being Despicable Me and Over the Hedge).
Style and Approach
Berroa is described to have a virtuosic, powerful pianistic style, using techniques from his classical training to achieve a metronomic sound with slight, intentional microrhythmic displacements. On his Instagram page, he uploaded a staggering amount of reels displaying his shredding ability, including playing 16th notes up to 250 BPM, and also joined in the Polyrhythm Warmup trend created by Israel Strom, demonstrating exceptional accuracy in performing his etudes. He has credited Louis Cole for the percussive elements of his playing, as Cole is known for "playing the keyboard like a drummer".
Berroa's compositions have a deeply layered, pensive sound. He talks about his creative process as draining and void of inspiration, believing in the process of "brute-forcing" all his musical ideas. This is lightheartedly reflected in one of his songs titled "depression".
