Jazz Musician Humility is when a pretentious Jazz musician makes a joke about their own genre in order to look self-deprecating, when in reality, they’re poking fun at outsiders.

Jazz musicians take pride in the complexity and inaccessibility of their music, and enjoy expressing their arrogance. But of course, they're generally not brave enough to come out and say “I’m proud that my music is elite and hard for you plebs to understand”, so they mask this sentiment with humour.

Examples

The jazzmemes_ page is riddled with this kind of presumptuous homour. Examples include:

A meme showcasing a group of gentlemen dancing to jazz fusion with “random chords played over some random drums”, when clearly, the song has structure and rhythm. The meme makes fun of outsiders, despite presenting as self-deprecating.

A meme showcasing a jazz quartet playing complete nonsense. The joke is that outsiders don’t understand jazz, but that will go over the heads of those with bad media literacy.
