Jazz Musician Humility
Jazz Musician Humility is a tactic used by Jazz musicians to elevate their prestige in the Jazz Imperial Complex, or in other words, to mock themselves in order to make fun of everybody else. It takes place in music colleges and jam sessions, but it's especially prevalent on social media.
If you see a reel with a caption like "jazz saxophonists playing the most random scales at 500 bpm", Jazz Musician Humility is exactly what they're using. Every caption in these types of memes obviously isn't accurate, they are all intentionally exaggerated in order to give the meme a "self-deprecating vibe". Most people take this as a lighthearted joke, give them the engagement they're looking for, and stop there. But underneath this layer is another one of arrogance, where the jazz musicians can't get enough of their own complexity and live under the false impression that non-jazz enjoyers can't understand their music. The examples on the right are helpful in recognizing this fake humility in action.
This not only raises them up on the JIC, but also appeals to the elites at the top, because it widens the gap in the hierarchy and increases the inaccessibility of Jazz itself, The non-jazzheads will continue to be mocked for "not understanding jazz", and the jazzheads lack the guts to publicly embrace their sense of superiority, leading them to dress it up with secretly ill-intentioned memes.
