Freudian Chord Spelling Theory posits that the way the top of the 7 curves down and looks kind of like a 9 in the jazz chord font is like a freudian slip for Jazz musicians not caring about specific extensions.
Why bother making the 7 look different than a 9 if the people reading it couldn't give less of a sh*t about precise chord extensions anyway? Or any small detail for that matter.
